“Social Distancing” Needs a New Name

We’re staying six feet apart, wearing masks and not gathering in groups. We are Physically Distancing. Social Distancing is a far more loaded, dire term. Social Distancing is an adverse consequence of Physical Distancing. The term Social Distancing reinforces a sense of loss, of being disconnected from our social circles and support groups. Our mental health and resolve depend on staying as socially connected as possible. Maintaining Physical Distancing is less of an ask, therefore more sustainable and less debilitating.  The notion of sustained Social Distancing can become soul crushing, where Physical Distancing is a relative walk in the park – from a safe distance.
